What is NAIDOC Week?

NAIDOC Week

Australia celebrates NAIDOC Week from the first Sunday in July through the following Sunday. The National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, or NAIDOC for short, was formerly known as the National Aborigines Day Observance Committee (NADOC). The 1938 Day of Mourning served as the inspiration for NAIDOC Week, which was expanded to a full week in 1975.

The history, culture, and accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are honored during NAIDOC Week. The week is observed not only in the communities of indigenous Australians but also in an increasing number of governmental institutions, educational institutions, local governments, and corporations.

The National NAIDOC Committee has declared that the 2023 NAIDOC Week celebrations will take place from July 2 through July 9.

NAIDOC Week 2023 Theme: For Our Elders

NAIDOC Week 2023

We are pleased to announce that For Our Elders will be the subject of National NAIDOC Week in 2023.

Our Elders have played a significant role in our communities and families for many generations, and they still do now.

They are guardians of cultural knowledge, pioneers, nurturers, protectors, educators, survivors, leaders, diligent workers, and our loved ones.

Our loved ones, who support us during our difficult times and rejoice with us during our happy ones. Who, when we need them, cooks us a meal to console us and discipline us.

They mentor our future generations and create the pathways that we can follow now. Guidance in daily life and how to position ourselves in the world, in addition to years of lobbying and activism.

We benefit from their expertise and knowledge in a wide range of fields, including human rights, justice, and land management. They have established the different paths we take in a variety of fields, including politics, the arts, health, and education.

Today, the struggles of our Elders aid in our progress. They fought for the equality that we still struggle for. Their perseverance and power have ensured our people's existence.

We must make sure that when it comes to future decision-making for our people, there is nothing about us - without us. This is due to their impact and their learnings.

We honor and show tribute to the Elders who have died and those who are still standing up for us in all of our Nations.

Activities and events in NAIDOC week

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC events are held all around Australia, and they involve public displays as well as cultural and educational activities in classrooms and businesses.

Activities for NAIDOC Week may include viewing related programs on Australian television (and their streaming services), listening to Indigenous Australian music, reading dream time stories, visiting Indigenous Australian websites online, organizing an art competition, and visiting Indigenous Australian websites.

Television networks like ABC and SBS schedule their programming for different days of the week to highlight performers, events, and other things on their many channels (as well as on their streaming services).

Both in Australia's major cities and in larger rural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, such as Alice Springs, Hermannsburg, Shepparton, and Mildura, significant commemoration events are held.

NAIDOC Awards

Each year, a new host city plays host to the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony and Ball, which marks the conclusion of NAIDOC Week celebrations. Live bands and Indigenous cuisine are included at the Ball.

NAIDOC Poster Competition

NAIDOC Poster Competition

In 1972, the first NAIDOC poster was produced to advertise "Aborigines Day." With slogans like "Self Determination" and "Chains or Chance" promoting political change and a day of mourning, the protest-oriented tone of the poster persisted until 1977.

Football

Since 2007, Claremont and South Fremantle of the West Australian Football League have played an Australian rules football match during NAIDOC week in Western Australia. The winner receives the Jimmy Melbourne Cup in honor of the first Indigenous Australian player to play senior football in a significant Australian football league.
