What is NAIDOC Week? 

NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Indigenous Day Observation Committee. It has its origins in National Mourning Day in 1938, becoming a week-long event in 1975. Aboriginal Australian groups strive to raise public awareness of the status and treatment of Turkic Australians. People and Residents of the Torres Strait.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history and cultural accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Week is celebrated in Indigenous Australian communities in government agencies, schools, local councils and workplaces.

When is NAIDOC Week?

NAIDOC Week is primarily celebrated in the First Week of July. This is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

What happens during NAIDOC Week?

Activities of NAIDOC Week

Each year, a new theme is chosen to reflect the key issues and events of NAIDOC Week.

The committee makes critical decisions about national NAIDOC activities, including host city, theme and National NAIDOC Poster Competition winners.

At the end of each NAIDOC Week, the National NAIDOC Awards are announced at a ceremony and dance held in the host city.

The annual NAIDOC Awards recognize the outstanding contributions Aboriginal Australians have made to improving the lives of Aboriginal people in their communities and beyond or to advancing Aboriginal issues in their communities. Broader community or excellence they have demonstrated in their chosen field.

For many Aboriginal people, NAIDOC week is the highlight of the year and they are willing to travel hundreds of miles to connect and meet with family and other community members.

The celebration of NAIDOC Week 2021 will be held from July 4-11, with the theme of Heal Country! This is a time to celebrate the history, culture and accomplishments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Get ready to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognize the contributions our Indigenous Australians have made to their country and communities.

This year's theme is Heal Country! An appeal to all to seek more excellent protection of the lands, waters, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To look at better ways to prevent exploitation, insult and destruction of the country. The nation is essential to Aboriginal identity, linking spiritual, physical, emotional, social and cultural life.

The theme supports substantial structural reform and the commitment to be made together as a country and re-establish the relationship Australia has with the peoples of our First Nations - the oldest continuing culture in the world.
